When should I offer my baby other foods?

It is best to wait until your baby is six months old before starting her on solids. If she is younger than six months, then she only needs your breastmilk. This is even more important is she was born early.

If your baby is older than 6 months, then she might be ready to start solids if:

  • She can sit up straight on your lap, and hold her head.
  • She moves her mouth as if chewing, and dribbles less. This means that she can move food to the back of her mouth to swallow. She is practising!
  • She is curious about what you're eating. If she reaches for your food, then she may be ready!

If you see any of these signs, she's probably ready for solids.
