Keeping bottles safe

As soon as it is possible, move your baby off a bottle and onto a cup.

If you are breastfeeding and storing you can put the milk in a cup. And if you are formula feeding try and move to cups from six months.

Cups are far easier to keep clean than bottles. If you are using bottles then the bottles need to be sterilised – in other words they need to be washed in very, very hot water and every part of the bottle needs to be washed in this way.

A spoon or cup must also be washed carefully in hot water, but there are a lot less places on a cup or spoon that germs can hide. If it is not possible to dry your cups, spoons or bottles with a very clean cloth, then rather leave them to dry in the air.
