Simple babyfood recipe: First foods

Best first foods for baby

The first foods you give your baby must be easy to digest and not cause an allergic reaction. Don't add salt or sugar to your baby's food, she doesn't need it. Salt will harm baby's kidneys and sugar creates a sweet tooth.

For the first few weeks only give baby rice cereal, then start mixing it with fruit or vegetable puree.

Foods to avoid in the beginning:
Cows milk
Dairy foods - yoghurt and cheese
Cereals made from wheat, rye, oats
Shellfish and fish
Spicy foods
Citrus fruits and fruits with seeds

Mixed root vegetable puree
Combine a selection of 3 root vegetables. Choose from: carrot/potato/sweet potato/pumpkin/parsnip

Peel, wash and chop your vegetables and place in a pot. Cover with boiling water and cook for 20min.

Blend the vegetables using the water they were cooked in to make it thin enough. You can add some of baby's usual milk too.

Serve lukewarm. Freeze the rest in an ice cube tray for later.

Root vegetables are a good weaning food as they have a naturally sweet taste and smooth texture when blended. Carrots are rich in betacarotene, which is Vitamin A.
