Should I ask for a clinical breast examination at my antenatal visits?

Yes. A doctor or midwife should perform a clinical breast examination at each antenatal visit. You should get into the habit of doing a breast self-examination every month and requesting a clinical breast examination at each antenatal visit if it has not been offered to you. Request one at each visit: once during pregnancy is not enough. There are approximately 1 000 000 live births per year in South Africa. We don’t know how many pregnant women in this country develop breast cancer.  Based on American figures, about 365 South African women will have a breast cancer during their pregnancy.

Clinical breast examinations are very important and should not be overlooked.
