Crazy breastfeeding facts:

Your baby is not the only one who benefits from breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is a miracle of nature that has many benefits to your body as well.

  • Breastfeeding causes an immediate reduction in bleeding after childbirth, which is why newborns are put to the mother’s breast just after birth
  • It helps the uterus shrink back to its pre-pregnancy shape and size.
  • Breastfeeding reduces in the amount of blood lost through menstruation. You may stop menstruating during the breastfeeding period, but you should keep in mind that you can still fall pregnant even if you do not get your period.
  • Women who breastfeed have less of a risk of developing the so-called ‘hormonal’ cancers (breast and ovarian cancers)
  • It may help you lose the weight you gained during pregnancy

Breast is best for your baby... and you! If you are HIV positive give your baby ONLY breast milk for the first 6 months (no water!) and his ARV syrup every day and take your ARVs. You’ll really reduce his chances of getting HIV.
